EU Carmakers battle targets

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, ACEA has created a front of opposition against the EU target of cutting all car CO2 emissions to 120 grams p/km by 2012, according to the Guardian. They claim that 60% of cars for 2012 are already in production and that “hasty legislation would damage the industry’s economic contribution and threaten thousands of jobs.”
In their defense, Mr. Marchionne- Fiat CEO and ACEA chairman claims the industry has already reduced emissions by 13% in the last 12 years and, with planning, could surpass the EU target of 20%.

“We are as committed as the commission to the 120g target and our goal is to continue a dialogue with them, seeking alternative solutions. We are not colliding with the commission on this.”

But the industry executives made it clear they were not prepared to take sole blame for the increasing pollution caused by road transport and that they believed technology alone was not the solution.

“Our Japanese colleagues have until 2015 to reach 138g and new overall emission standards known as Euro6 come into effect that year.”
